Exhibition
At the end of project we have the fun task of making an exhibition piece, about the work we've been working on for the last few months. I've decided that there are some key parts of the project that I would want to show case to those who attend the exhibition. Those being my research tasks, the production process through pictures and mic explanation and all the graphic work that I've done for the project. To make a successful exhibition piece I've decided to keep into consideration the different types of exhibitions further decided what type would be the best way to present my project. Exhibitions is more so something done to best display an artists selection of work, so it'd be hard to apply to an audio based project. The terms below will be in correspondent to art galleries, which I will need to adapt for my own work.
Exhibition types:
Art Installation: According to the tate.org an art installation is used to describe large-scale, mixed-media constructions, often designed for a specific place or for a temporary period of time[44]. The piece is usually the size of a room, so on lookers can observe the project clearly.
Conceptual Art: conceptual art was popular in the 1960's-1970's. It clearly looks at the development of the project instead of the final product.[45] The term usually refers to art made from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s.

Multi-media: is often refers to an exhibition piece that is made from a collection of different materials. The exhibition often involves audio, film, graphics and images. Andy Wharol popularised the movement of multi-media exhibitions pieces.
My Exhibition:
My exhibition will probably be a combination of multi media and art instillation. If I can I would like to have a small room for my exhibition so I can add interactive pieces such as a "Could you host a podcast show?" which would be accompanied with a microphone, laptop and headphones so the guests could try recording there own audio, accompanied by prompts that I would leave them and a simple set up so they can make an introduction. I would also like to have a questioner section so they can tell me what they learnt in there youth through the use of a ballot box. However, I believe that I will not have this space so I would have to instead make a smaller version of the exhibition piece which is show below. Once given instruction of where I will be for the exhibition I will be able to further plan it.
Ideally I will have three boards and a table to present all the aspects of my project.
Board One I will have sound proofing foam to demonstrate the environment that I produced my work in, I will have three things dangling from the top of the board.
I will have a picture of the RODE NT2 mic and an explanation of what mic I have used and why I picked the RODE NT2. I will also have a series of pictures of the studio, on the back of these photos I will again have explanations of why this studio and the different experiences I had during production. On the table there will be two folders, one about research. I will select eight research tasks that I feel best present my research skills and another being the mind maps of the episodes. There will also be an explanation of the project. As shown by the drawing to the left. |
Board Two will have all my graphic design and social media design work presented on this board. The board will be split into three sections, Part One: Colour codes and experimentation. Part Two the final products of the episode art work and logo and finally my favourite social media posts.
On the table there will be the links for exhibition viewers to view to look at the social media elements of the project. |
Board Three (optional board) This board will be an interactive board that allows for the exhibition audience to interact with my project. I also know that research never finishes, so I will be conducting some during my exhibition. The question I want answered is what did people learn in there youth, and what did they think of the project I've done. This will be conducted through two que cards that'll be left on the table, a ballot box and a pen. The questions will be presented on both the board and the que cards so it's easy for the audience to answer the questions asked.
The questions will be written in the same font as the main figure so the project is consistently linear. |
I've decided that if I want to have a three way exhibition space, I've got to make it. After some great consideration I've figured out how I will make my display board. Using three memo cork boards, and six hinges I'll be able to make the display board. This caused me to consider the cost of the exhibition piece with all the elements that I want involved in the exhibition. As you can see to the left, I have a budget for the exhibition. I don't think the total is to much considering the piece should be rather big and hopefully an impressive installation to end a fun and successful project.

I've been thinking about the exhibitions. I've decided if I can, I'll paint the cork boards the same colours as my logo or have my logo on the base of the boards.
Putting it all together
I've bought three cork boards, the hinges and spray paint. I decided that I would spray paint the wooden frame of the cork boards. I decided that I would spray them yellow ,blue and purple. Again, Yellow and Blue to match the logo and purple, because I like the colour purple and I saw an opportunity to use it. The plan for the three boards are as follows: the first board will be about the production, the second will be for the graphic design element and the third will be used as a questionner space/ interactive element to the project. The first step was spraying the boards.
Step One:
Painting the boards:
On the table you can see the three spray paints, a primer, frog tape, a stanley knife and the memo boards. The memo boards come with a clear casing, I decided that I could cut the clear space to cover the memo board which was then stuck to the board to protect the cork when painting the frame. I then primered the board so the paint didn't seep through. The paint I selected had a matt finish to it so it would look sleek and clean. Once primered, I re sealed the board to apply the yellow paint. I continued to do this to all three boards.(sadly, I don't have a picture of all three of the cork boards, but I do have a picture of the blue and yellow boards.) |
|
As you can see the yellow board is sprayed grey and the blue one is not. At this point I wanted to use the yellow one for the centre board which would have my graphic work on it so here would be a lot of free space. So it'd need a background. The blue board will be used for the production element of the project, which will be covered in sound proofing.
The third board is purple with a vinyl printing of my logo. |
As you can see the purple board was used so there wouldn't be to much yellow and blue. Making this board stand out the vinyl has a whiteboard texture, so I can write on it. So I can write a question for the audience on the board. It was incredibly hard to apply the vinly to the board. Having to apply it by pealing sections of the sticker off the back, cutting the back off then using a card to make sure there were not bubbles on the sticker. It was very much like wall papering a wall, but with one chance because I'm not spending £50 on another sticker (laughs nervously)
|
Step Two:
I'd taken the exhibition pieces into college, they will remain in storage until we start putting it all together.
Final Product
So I am really excited about my exhibition space, I was able to make the exhibition boards I planned on making and the graphic design. Everything I first planned went so well. I'll be honest, I'm pretty proud of the space and the work I've put into the exhibition.
Section One:
As you can see the first board almost perfectly represents the initial (badly) drawn design. As you can see I used the sound proofing only on one side that there is space for the various explanations of podcasting. I felt like there needed to be more of a through explanation about why I decided to make a podcast over anything else and what my podcast was about. As you can see at the bottom of the board I made a diagram that describes the process of making a podcast. I really like this board as it gives a comprehensive look at podcasting portion of the project. The red and green card actually doesn't represent anything but at the time was the only amount of card I had at the time. I feel as though I utilised the board space a lot better then I had initially planned.
|
So I changed the format of the initial planning, I added two more sections the social media and merchandise section. The merchandise section was added as a small side project, which I became proud of so I wanted to add it to the exhibition. The work on this board is mostly visual, with some small explanation about why I choose the minimalistic style. There is actually a colour code on this board, Blue represents the graphic work, Yellow represented the social media section and Green represented merchandise. I feel as though the board is separated very well and each section is clear, so it looks organised and well planned.
|
In the first two boards, I feel as though the project is really well explained. My motives, goals and final pieces are all well represented. So it gives me space to ask for future Ideas for different episodes. It's also important to note that research never ends, and if I can continue my research through my exhibition then it is an opportunity that I shouldn't waste. It's also a great way to be interactive with the audience.
|
The merchandise photoshoot was a little last minute, as the boards had already been built so I decided to instead take the photos and put them on sugar paper. I asked niche to model for me (she featured in episode four) and I then edited them in adobe lightroom to get the sleek professional vibe that it shows.I'm generally really proud of the photos because photography isn't really my cup of tea, so I was proud of how the photos came out. This is somewhat an extension of board tow.
Section Two:
This is the more of an immersive section of the exhibition where people can make there own episodes. Using the instructions laid out in front of them. The instructions in the clear envelopes are instructions on how to use adobe audition, and the pink instructions is a talk through of vocal prompts for the creator.

In all honesty, it's taken a few months to get the exhibition together. It all started with spray painting the boards, then putting them together. Printing all the sections of the project and decorating them. It was a long process but it was incredibly enjoyable. I feel as though my initial ideas are very close to the finished product and possibly better. So I am genuinely very proud of the exhibition final piece. It's a really good way to finish my three years at Stanmore, it's something I want to share with friends and family on the open day instead avoiding them like I have for the last three years
