Reflective log
Week One:19th February 2018- 25th February.
This really is like the final bow before the curtains come down. Which means this is the final few months of my Stanmore Journey. I've decided to do something a little different from what other students have done in the past. I've decided for my FMP I will make a podcast series. I know, I'm excited to. Anyways before I get too excited about the pre-production and general production I've got ALOT of research to do first. So I decided to make a break down of the essays I shall write. I will work on the four essays in the next four weeks starting today. These, of course, are essays based on podcasts and the podcasting industry, once I've decided on the topics of my podcasts episodes I shall research the topics themselves because I could further educate my listeners.
Whilst also working on my Peach Kucha and proposal. The thing I really love about the FMP is that it is self-directed, so I can work on my own personal schedule.
Because I have finished Unit 9,10,11 and 12 it means I get to start the FMP now, which is nice. I've found that I am the only one in the class who currently has the privilege of doing it. So I'll spend this time getting really ready for the project.
I decided to make a trip down to the library (6th/2nd/2018) I decided I would take out three books on media communication and one on interpreting audiences. I did look specifically for PODCASTING, but they didn't have any in the library. As you can see on my blog, I've done the task 1 and 2 from the first essay. I also emailed the creator of a pod-casting series of the guilty feminist to ask if she would like to answer a few questions for my primary research section this would enable me to get a better idea of how to be a podcaster and the industry itself.

I decided I would focus on making the first draft of my final major project logo. This included me scheduling the project against my own personal schedule and the schedule based on the project. Because I stared the project early it means the projects schedule is a little behind my own.
I also started working on my logo ideas, I'm not much of a sketcher so I decided I would jump straight to Photoshop. I've always liked the idea of making a piece which is somewhat abstract. So instead of taking a whole picture, I would take elements of a picture to show the object that I want to focus on. I decided for the first idea for the logo I would take a picture I took of myself and color in sections of the hair and my glasses. So, you have an idea of what the pod caster (me) looks like. This was done without any initial research on podcast logos, I did this more so for fun and to get a better understanding of my skills.

Obviously as you can see I missed the text, I did this because I already know the title but I haven't had any idea about the font so far. As this was just done for fun I'm not worried.
Today I got in contact with podcaster Kevin Cryptids. His podcast focus is fictional based with a story telling element. It seems as though he records horror stories that he has either written or is interested in. He has a small following of 48 subscribers on youtube and 741 followers on instagram. Considering he is an independent podcaster I decided I would contact him to see if he would answer a few questions I have on podcasting. I am yet to hear back from the guilty feminist and I doubt I will due to how many followers they have on all platforms.

I handed in my proposal and was given feedback. It was suggested that I add a visual element to the project through the use of social media which would make my project multi platform. It was also suggested that I change the name of the podcast because it's limiting. So I've decided to change it from "Thing's I learnt in 2017" to "Shit I'm learning in my youth". Youth describes being closer to an adult then a teenager. Which I feel perfectly describes the phase of life I'm in right now.
I spent the weekend experimenting with some mics in BigBossStudios. I am due a sit down with the engineer so I understand on a practical level why I should use which mics, this conversation with him will allow me to understand the different microphones better on a practical level. I've also created and distributed my questioners on tumblr and instagram. |
Week Two: 26th February- 4th March 2018
The week that is snowed.
Instead of sitting around doing nothing, I decided I would get my project together on a multiplatform website so I know what I have left to do. I set up an account on Monday.Com. Monday.Com is a website primarily for team work, so you can schedule and plan with a group the tasks left in a project. As there is only one person on this project (Me) it was easy enough to set up. I inputted all the tasks I'd finished and all the tasks I had left to do so that I'd have an idea on what I've done in the project and what my next set of steps will be. When I had all this information together I was able to plan what I would be doing for the next few days. I decided that I would focus on five different research tasks.
This week I will be focusing on the codes essay, posting all my work on my blog and arranging a focus group. I plan on having all my research done by the 13th March 2018, so I can move onto my pre production which I have two weeks to complete.

- HOW TO MAKE A PODCAST
- PODCASTING FORMATS
- PODCASTING VARIANTS
- HOSTING SITES FOR PODCASTS
- HOW TO MAKE AN EFFECTIVE SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN
This week I will be focusing on the codes essay, posting all my work on my blog and arranging a focus group. I plan on having all my research done by the 13th March 2018, so I can move onto my pre production which I have two weeks to complete.
Week Three: 5th March 2018 - 11th March 2018
I was able to complete most of my research tasks with only my case study and experimentation left to do. I was a little confused in regards to what will be needed for my case study because there are no linear conventions of podcasts,so I plan on speaking to my tutor on the 12th about what I should do. We only see him once a week which makes it almost impossible when your trying to find him for help. Be he is accessible by email, but I would much prefer to speak to him about it because I’ll then have a better understanding. I’ve also been in contact with podcaster Kevin Cryptids, to arrange an interview for my primary research. As seen above. Next week I plan on booking the studio and arranging times with the people involved in the show. I will also be creating mind maps and a budget to start my pre production. I will complete the case study and experimentation work in the easter holiday. I’ve asked a few teachers to have a look at what I’ve done so far, they seemed impressed. Which is relieving me of stress. I need to get a merit to get into my uni of choice, so as you can imagine I am very nervous about the project and everything I’m currently doing.
Week Four: 12th March-18th March
During this week I focused mostly on the pre-production process, I decided that I need to prioritise my pre-production as it is coming up to my scheduled production period. I am yet to complete two primary research essays which I plan on finishing during the Easter break as I'll have two weeks off, during this period I plan on taking photos and thinking of tweets to type through the production and distribution period. Sadly, Kevin Crypts didn't get back to me for the skype interview but agreed to answer my written questions. Which I am excited about, it would've been better if I could get a skype interview but at this point I'll take what I can get.
I'm not worried about the production process, I've asked my mother to possibly record a bonus episode with me so that I have five episodes even if one does tank. I decided to ask my mother because she is good talk value, I'm very comfortable with her and we have a great relationship which I feels comes through in the experimentation podcast.

Week Five: 19th March- 25th March
The last week has been slow but hectic. I know that doesn't really make any sense but I do feel as though that's the best way to describe the week. Slow but Hectic. I spent a lot of the week pondering if I've made the right decision in regards to the project I plan on pursuing. This was bought on by the struggle of writing a codes essay in regards to podcasts codes essay. In the last three years when ever I've started a project it started with a code and conventions essay. Which in fairness is hard to execute when the codes are still emerging due to its relatively new format. Which forced me down a spiral of doubt that I couldn't do it. So, I had a few days of regret, and wanted to change the project. Even though I am inches away from the production stage.
Until I was given some un-solicited advice on the issue, I was reassured that I do have an idea, the project is worth it and the first of its kind (in regards to what's been done in Stanmore college before). Of course, I'm going to have insecurity about it, when there aren't others in my class doing the same thing. It's like sailing in a speed boat with the rest on a slow curies ship.
After the chat, I was able to calm my thoughts and write an essay. Which I think is one of my best essays yet. The essay instead investigates other forms of media and how they influence the podcasting format and how I think it'll emerge. This week, I'll be focusing on production (in regards to the social media and logo aspect.) I'm in a good position that I am becoming excited by the project. Not once have I been fed up and I've kept engaged through the whole process so far.

So I just want to talk about above a little bit. (the list of things I planned on doing). Here's the thing, I approached this project with my visual/film hat on. Which I later realised was no good to me at all. As you can see from my codes essay, Essay three became irrelvent pretty quickly when I realised there aren't any convetions. So I decided to do a different take on essay three which later became codes of podcasts. The content of the essay reflects on the roots of podcasting through other media convetions.
Essay Four is missing point four, because I couldn't find a relevent audeince thoery that I felt applied to podcasting.
Experimentation took a strange turn, instead of doing equipment experimentation I decided to instead just make a podcast with my ma, I did do the experimentation with five different mics but I found it hard to place on my blog. The work isn't wasted, it just hasn't found it's place on my blog yet.

Week Six: 26th March- 30th March 2018 & Week Seven: Week Nine: 31st March-6th April 2018
I honestly haven't done much because I feel as though I deserve a break before the production process starts.
Week Eight: 7th April 2018- 13th April 2018
Hello! After a week of hibernation, I've returned back to my semi-productive self. In the last week I have recorded two separate podcast episodes, each with a run time of 30+ minutes. The Health Episode ran to 38 minutes, and the growing up episode ran to 48 minutes. I've had to reschedule the other three episodes and am still waiting for conformation bookings, but it gives me more time to work on the post-production of the two episodes.
I've also decided that if I can, I will try and make my own music tracks for the intro & outro. I'm yet to record the advertisement but I'm waiting on the various creators to get back to me in regards to the name of their products.
In regards to the social media aspect of the project, I feel as though it's been a challenge keep up to date with Instagram content, because it takes more time to create but I've been working on a few visual pieces that represent each episode. Twitter has been easy enough to keep up with, posting once a week or there about as you can see in the pre-production section and the final product section.
I'm still waiting on Kevin Cryptids to get back to me, this has been a waiting game but I'm stubborn. So, I'll get the results eventually. I'm a little nervous about getting back to college after the Easter term because we'll be having an interim assessment, which means the work we've done so far will get marked and we'll get verbal feedback on the project. It also means there are only 7 weeks left till the deadline. Which is scary, I'm looking forward to planning the exhibition though, I've got a few ideas in mind.

Week Nine: 14th April 2018- 20th April 2018
The week has started off well, I feel I've got over my not wanting to do anything rut. Which is good, because if it went on any longer I would've become very worried. Anyways, back to why the week has started well. I've done a rough cut of the episode about growing up, it now runs to 35 minutes instead of the 48 minutes it was to begin with. I've also been playing with some samples available on logic, and I've made an intro track that I enjoy.
As mentioned above, I'm a little behind on my schedule as I didn't record most episodes during the easter break, which I'm rather disheartened about. However, I'm not worried. When planning the project I gave myself a week or two leeway for mistakes and re-recordings which I usually have to do. So far, It's actually been going really well, so I'm not expecting any re-recordings. On Monday 16th April, I plan on rescheduling the three recording days for the next week or two. So far it has taken me an hour per episode to get to a rough cut, so I'm expecting another two hours for perfecting, adding sound and fades. I made note of all the things I have left for this project: (in order)

1. Record remaining episodes (Four Hours)
1.1 Episode One
1.2 Episode Four
1.3 Episode Five
1.4 Record advertisement
2. Describe problem solving for all elements in the project.
3. Production Process of podcasting.
4.Post production process/ edit podcasts.
5.Distribute podcast
6.Write weekly reflective logs
7. Evaluation
8. Clean up blog
1.1 Episode One
1.2 Episode Four
1.3 Episode Five
1.4 Record advertisement
2. Describe problem solving for all elements in the project.
3. Production Process of podcasting.
4.Post production process/ edit podcasts.

7. Evaluation
8. Clean up blog
As you can see above, there are only eight tasks left. They're all huge tasks, but it's not like I'm snowed under. I've got control over the project and my time management. Which I've been really pleased with so far through the project, as it has currently been going I've had every thing done when I said I would.
Another thing I've been really happy with, Kevin Cryptids got back to me! WITH ANSWERS! Which can be seen in my research section on my blog. This week will be a good one. Also I've rescheduled the three episodes which needed recording, I feel on top of the project again. Which I haven't for the last few episodes

When discussing my episodes with a lecturer they bought up the idea that for the religious episode that I should have a representative of each of the main religions making there point in the episodes. I decided to stick to my original idea because if I have a person from each religion it was completely change the format and type of podcast I'm creating. Instead of a round table podcast, I am recording a co-hosted podcast. My podcast is also autobiographical and humours, the episode would change to a religious and political episode. Which would not follow the theme or format of my podcast.
Week Ten: 21st April 2018 -27th April 2018
I decided I would experiment with distributing the demo episode of the shit I learnt in my youth series. I first decided to use PodOmatic, I found the website hard to use, and it wasn't very clear how to upload content which was incredibly annoying. It also placed the podcast episode in draft until it was fully published which would take a few hours. The website also didn't follow the aesthetics of the project, which meant it would look out of place.
I decided to then use Speakero, which is another podcasting website. It was generally clearer to use, and also tracks views per episode which would be very helpful if I was looking to make the web series for a mass audience or for commercial use. Speakero also allowed for the user to display more then one show, so I was able to make a different show playlist for the demo, which would make it clearer for the examiner to mark the various episodes.
One of the co-hosts for episode five had to reschedule the recording, which leaves me in a bit of a stump. I'm not sure that I actually want to record this episode anymore, I'm not excited about it like I was the rest of them. So I'm planning on making another plan for episode five. Possibly about the future with my ma. I'm going to get some advice from a lecture to see what they think about the final episode change. To make another episode I would have to make another graphic for the episode and a mind map. Which I could do very quickly.
After speaking to a teacher about the change, they encouraged it so I'd have a nice closing to the series and good content. I do feel it's a shame that I had to change it ( due to my own concerns about the co-host) but I think it's the right thing to do for the two of us and our individual projects. There are parts of the project that the old design and plan will echo through. But where I could change it I did.
Sadly the episodes had to be rescheduled which I've spoken about in my problem solving page, but it's only to next week. So I don't feel insecure about it.
I decided to speak to the colleges technicians about the best way to present my podcast I suggested I do snippets or best bits, but he reassured me that it would be playing all day long. So I may as well have the episodes playing on loop through the day. I've decided that it depends where I'll be will depend on what I end up doing. If I'm in a room alone, I'll play the episodes in full. If I'm in a space sharing with others, I'll make a best bits section.

Week Eleven:28th April-5th May 2018 (One Month Till Final Deadline)
I've been thinking about my exhibition a lot recently, I've decided because it's the last one I'll ever do with Stanmore it should be something special or at-least something I'm very proud of. In an ideal world I would have a room all to myself so I could show off the various elements of my project. Adding two-three different interactive elements and also a fair display of all my work. As drawn in my exhibition section, I was also considering painting the cork boards the same colour as my logo. Using car paint to spray it, after great consideration and some disscusion with my co-workers at halfords it was made clear that it may not work and instead drip, seep through whilst generally looking rubbish. So I decided that I would do some research on the topic over the next few weeks. I've also started my evaluation. I started writing the section which explains my motives for the project and how I feel the proposal has futher induelcned my work. I have also decided that I will have the first draft of my evaluation finished by the end of the week. I also plan to have all the recordings for the epsisodes done for the fith. It's safe to say this is going to be a hectic week.
Week Twelve 6th May - 13th May 2018 (Three weeks till final deadline)
I decided I would ask for student feedback. I asked three different students what they thought about the podcast the ages being 17-18 years old. I first asked the candidates what topic they'd find interesting. Both Nieche and Jay picked the growing up episode, and Alex picked the friendship episode which was recorded and edited the day before him listening to it. As you can see below I made a questionner for the candidates to answer, the type face is constant through out the project so it looks linear and is easy to identify as something that belongs to the "Shit I learnt in My Youth Series". I also plan to ask a handful of first year students to listen to my project to get more feedback. Below I'm quickly going to show you the positive and negative feedback which was given to the episodes the first sample of people had listened to . You can also read the feedback through the questionners below.

As you can see there is generally really positive feedback. Nieches points that she made I mended by adjusting the noise gate turning it from a -43 to -83 which gave the product a consistent fuzzy sound. Which is heard through most podcast series such as true crime all the time. I'm generally really happy with the feedback but I will also ask more people further in the week so that I am given a clearer direction on the task.
This week I also finished the first draft, which I annotated to make it either clearer or asking myself to expand on ideas and thoughts I'm expressing.

I've finished all the episodes and I am generally really proud of the final products. They're almost exactly how I wanted them to turn out. I'm not so happy of the health episode (episode two) or the future (episode five). They aren't to a lower stranded technically, the content just isn't something I would personally listen to if it was a different podcasting series. I am however very proud of episode one, episode three and episode four. I feel as these episode best project my intentions of my project. I enjoy the content of all three episodes but I feel as though episode one will be the most helpful to my class mates as it shows that even if you fail there are other options.
Instead of using the excel spread sheet for distribution I re-booted my Monday account, and now have transferred the data to that website. I've also moved the distribution dates earlier because I have all the products finished. I've asked some girls from the first year to listen to the episodes so I can get some constructive feedback in regards to the episode of there choice.

Week Thirteen: 14th May-21st May 2018 (Two weeks till final deadline)
It's only the 14th and so much has been done. I was able to finish my evaluation, handing it in to two of my teachers. The feedback given was actually amazing. Usually when I hand in an evaluation or any written task I usually get it handed back scrawled in red and green ink, with this task that I handed in didn't come back with any of this. It was handed back with ticks all over and a compliment that it is a good reflection of this project and an element the teachers have liked is the story telling element of the project. At this point, I have nothing to do. I've already planned the exhibition and bought all the items needed for the exhibition. I am yet to buy string for the boards but after that I'll be finished. I've also been lucky enough that my father bought me a t-shirt with my logo on it to wear during my exhibition, this prompted me to start designing merchandise that could be bought by listeners. I designed and posted the products in the final project section. I m currently really happy and proud of my final products and the project itself. My project is live and anyone can listen to it, so I'm looking forward to the feedback I could get if it gets a few views.I got some feedback from those around me about the final pieces it was pointed out to me that the intro music "blasts" which I hadn't realised before, so I will be changing that and re-uploading the episodes.
Week Fourteen: 22nd May 2018-30th May 2018 (One week Till Final deadline)
Everything's pretty much done at this point, so I'm not really doing anything. I was given the go ahead on which space I could use during the exhibition, so I am currently working on it. I've decided that because I was given more space I would possibly introduce an interactive section to the exhibition in which others would get a chance to record there own podcast episode if they wanted to. I will need a mic, abobe audition and some written prompts for those who want to get involved in the activity. I'm aware no one will probably do it, but I still feel like it would be an interesting activity to add to the experience. Basically I've got to much time on my hands and I'm filling it up with other things to do. I'll be taking pictures of the room to see which items I want taken out, and what can I cover up. I'm going to make some notes when I see the room and post them in my exhibition section. When I return from the week break I'll be focusing on the exhibition, sadly the deadline is on the 4th June, so I'm considering posting after the deadline If I've given the go a head. I'd like my work to be given to next years second students as a reference of good work, because I've worked like mad and I want to show it off (Obviously). So I will probably will update the work and also change the home page to something polite and directed at the second years (current first years).
Week Fifteen:4th June DUE DAY
It's all good. Today is the final deadline for the project am I nervous, hell yeah. Who isn't, this is the most important project of my academic life. I'm nervous, but confident. I'm sure it'll be okay.
