Logo
Idea mindmap and concepts:
Above are four concept ideas for my logo:
Idea one: features a combination of both graphic work and real images. The photo figure would be of me in a baby costume which would show youth in a literal sense, it would be accompanied by a graphic designed background of a nursery with the name of the show "Shit I'm learning in my youth" in red scribbly childlike hand writing. The logo would suggest that the podcast is very funny, can sometimes be inappropriate and will be about a growing process. I do like this idea but I don't think it's actually appropriate for my own podcast, possibly if it was a solo podcast I would pursue the idea. I also have to consider the practicalities, I'm in no way an artist so a graphic based arty background would be far beyond my reach, I could pursue someone else to create the background but I don't feel as though that is feasible in the time I have available. I also wouldn't be able to criticise the piece created by someone for me, as it would be done for free. |
Idea 2: The second concept is my favourite of the four. This concept includes a silhouette of my glasses and hair to introduce the host to the audience. This is an effective method to develop a relationship between the host and the audience. I also believe this is the best idea because of it's minimalist design.
If we look at the concept design (on the right labelled idea 2) we can see how simple the idea really is. To make it more appalling I will add the colour combination of yellow and blue, as decided by my research (see logo research) |
Idea 3: Idea three is influenced from the name of the podcast, the idea was also suggested to me by a friend to have a chocolate shaped poop with a tag saying "What I learnt in my youth". It is meant to be suggested as a crude joke, I personally was not fond of the idea but I thought I would write about it anyways.
The reasons I'm not found of the logo idea is because it's a boring idea, it's crude, it also steers away from the message of my podcast which is to educate and entertain people of things you learn between the ages of 15-18. |
Idea 4: (not that it is well drawn) is meant to be the host in smart casual clothing, with the name of the show at the bottom. The idea is more sophisticated then the others and shows the audience the host of the show directly. The idea would also be the easiest one to achieve as I would just need a camera and a person. I do like the idea but I think it wouldn't convey the show very well, the connotations of someone dressed in smart casual is that it'll be relaxed but there will be a focus on serious topics. My show is more so autobiographical with a hint of self depreciating satire, so this idea wouldn't be appropriate.
|
In conclusion I will be pursuing idea concept two, because it is the most appropriate to convey my podcast. It allows distant intimacy between the host and the show, it also gives no direct evidence of what theme the podcast will be in, which I feel gives the hosts and the guests more freedom then being demanded into a comedy role because of the graphic which represents the podcast. I also like the use of glasses which has underlaying connotations of smart/intellectual and high brow people, which will possibly draw out a wider audience then the one originally intended.
Typography
When thinking about the logo I decided to take into consideration the typography. I decided I would use a script typeface in the style of hand writing/italics. I believe it'll match idea two (the one I'll be pursuing for my final product). The type face could be a classic type face in comparison to aggressive modernised strikes. I will find similar logos on websites such as 1001 font.

Episode Art Work
Idea Mind Map and Visual concepts:
I decided to make the episode art work based on a graduation cap.
The cap will also be the easiest object to re create for the logo compared to the robe or a beer can. Beer cans are also associated with night clubs, alcoholism and partying which isn't a reason people go to university. I'll be going to university for the biggest moment an under graduate can experience I always think about the graduation cap, throwing it in the air to mark the end of a life changing chapter. As displayed here, I have no drawing ability what so ever. But, you get the idea (hopefully). For the episode art work I will have the main cap in yellow and the string in the same blue as my glasses. |
I decided to go with the Apple concept because it is the first thing I associate with health. "eat an apple a day, keeps the doctor away", most people know this saying so will associate an apple with health.
An apple is also easy to draw, which makes creating the product a lot easier. Yellow will be the most dominant color as it is the primary color in my color pallet. |
Idea one: The swirls
I find that relationships/friendships are always hectic, complicated and passionate. I believe the swirls indicate a sense of being unsettled. The two swirls represent people and them being layered represent the relationship the two swirls share. It was pointed out that the blue (in this case) has very male under tones which can be explained away through the explanation of my podcast identity. Idea Two: The two M's. The two figures better represent two different people with the use of the 'O' as a face and the letters as a body of the two people. The two would still over lay each other to represent the collision of two people My preference is the swirls, but it was suggested that it isn't easy to understand what they're meant to represent. |
The trinity knot:
I didn't feel comfortable using christian symbolism for the podcast art work. In my head it translated as disrespectful, so I decided to instead use something neutral. The Celtic trinity knot has roots in both paganism (my religion) and (early) Christianity. It was considered sacred by the Celts. [] The guest on my show comes from a christian back ground and I identify as a pagan (Wicca/Druid). In Christianity the knot is associated as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In paganism the symbol is associated with of Mother, Crone and Maiden. (which is also the same as the triple Goddesses this will be spoken about in the podcast). |
Merchandise
I decided that I would make some merchandise to represent the show and my podcast brand. I decided to use basic merchandise ideas like using a cup or t-shirt to make merchandise. Merchandise is a really good way to earn money when producing an independent podcast. I decided I would again stick to a very simple theme using a single figure that represents the podcast in one way or another. Due to the name, "Shit I'm learning in my youth" I decided I would use an emoji style poop to represent the name. Emoji style poops are being used everywhere, and on everything, you can now buy pillows and hats with the signature emoji on them so using a poop figure won't be frowned upon as it would've five years ago. I decided to design products based on the ones initially researched.
This is the first T-shirt design that I made, I decided that the title would be in censored lettering, if a listener of my podcast was around children through siblings or extended family they would be able to represent the brand on a t-shirt without subjecting children to swearing. I decided to use @ and a * so that the swear word isn't obvious to those who don't swear.
This T-shirt could also be used if I extended to have a team, we could wear the t-shirts as a casual uniform. |
Idea two is a simple idea which would have the logo center on the front of the t-shirt and the back would be plain. This is a standard t-shirt designed that would be sold at a cheaper price. If we look at the price of podcast merchandise for podcasts such as true crime all the time we can see that they sell there t-shirt designs for $19.99 (£14.71).
If I was to sell my basic t-shirt design I would sell it for $15 (£11), because my podcast series is independent and true crime all the time is created by Wondery which is a podcasting network company. |

Idea One: This will have a focus on two different design ideas. Having the two main symbols that will be used in each corner of the tote bag which would be rather large. I decided to use a poop style emoji to en-capture the shows name. The poop style emoji will be used because it is rather normalised in my target audience as there is a range of merchandise which is based around the emoji style (as seen below). The designs would be in the color scheme of the logo, the outline of the poop would be blue and the main figure would be yellow. This is my prefreble style of the tote bags because I like the two figures on different areas of the bag.
Idea Two: This idea is very simple it would be the logo in the middle of the tote bag on the totes background. Due to the logos style it wouldn't have to be surrounded by a white block but instead would be a PNG of the logo for it to be stand alone. Idea Three: Is the poop emoji in the centre of the tote, with no background other then the totes material. The poop represents the shows name "shit I learnt in my youth". Idea Four: The fourth idea would be the name of the show across the bag. The name would be in the same color as the glasses for the show with the logo very small in the corner. My preference of the ideas is a mix of the first and the fourth, the ideas could be used on the same design using the first idea on the right side of the tote and the fourth could be the back of the tote. |

Slide One (Idea One and Two): The stickers would be formatted in rectangles, so they could be easily applied to small surfaces and laptop cases. This is seen in a range of sticker designs, such as the one plus phone company stickers which you get when you buy a one plus phone. The sticker at the top would be in blue with a bold black box surrounding it to stand out and the second would be yellow with a bold black box surrounding it. These stickers would be considered deluxe because they would be in the same typography as the logo. Which would be Chew BB. As you can see the stickers come in both censored versions and normal versions as explained above. The deluxe stickers would be sold at £2.50 each.
Slide Two (Idea Three and Four): The stickers would be formatted in large rectangles, in an Ariel font which would be the standard stickers. They will also come in both the normal version and censored version. The standard stickers would be sold at £1.50 each. Slide Three (Idea Five, Six and Seven): Idea Five focuses on the glasses, it will be the glasses in blue with a yellow background which represents the logo design. Yellow being the dominant color in the project. Idea Six focuses on the logo, the logo will be the main figure of the sticker on a white background. The idea is very simple and minimalist. Idea Seven focuses on the logo and the title. The title will be bridged with the logo being the dominant character of the sticker. My preference in design is idea five and six, I enjoy the minimalist look of both and would myself purchase the stickers. I would sell the sticker designs between £1.50 each. |
